Some weeks ago, a drilling mud cleaner arrived GN Solids America in Houston. It will be dispatched to the local client with other equipment soon for drilling mud processing project.

Drilling mud cleaner is a very popular separation equipment to process drilling mud and waste slurries. The mud cleaner dispatched to GN Solids America is a 3-in-1 model. It is composed of a shale shaker, desander separator and desilter separator. Before enter into the mud cleaner, the drilling mud will be pre-treated by shale shaker to remove the big solids and to reduce the solids content.

The desander and desiler assembly is a separate unit which is located on the top of a shale shaker. Clients can remove the cyclone unit and use the mud cleaner as a separate shale shaker.

The screens are used for mud cleaner is normally very fine screens with small opening. As the hydro cyclones used for the mud cleaner is 10 inch for desander and 4 inch for desilter. The desilter separator cut point is 27 microns. So the shaker screen on the underflow shale shaker should be smaller than 27 microns. The fine screens are used to further recover drilling mud.

Except for the mud cleaner, decanter centrifuge package is hot sale separation equipment from GN Solids Control. GN Solids Control is capacity to make fixed speed centrifuge, VFD centrifuge and FHD centrifuge. There is a Desander cyclone, a double deck shale shaker and a centrifugal pump are included in GNMS-1500D Pipe Jacking Slurry Separation Desander Plant.

The desanding plant includes 2 no. of 14 inch desander cyclone. The cyclone desander is made according to the separation principle of the solid in the fluid rotating in the desander, which integrates swirling flow and filtration. Desanding hydrocyclones are widely used in water treatment and drilling fluid solid control systems in various petroleum and non petroleum fields. Realize turbidity removal and solid-liquid separation.

Double deck shale shaker is used under the desander cyclone. The bottom deck is used as solids separation shale shaker. The upper deck shale shaker is used after desander cyclone. The dirty mud will be pumped to the bottom shale shaker for coarse separation, and sand will be discharged. The drilling mud will fall down to the sand trap under the shale shaker. And the the drilling mud in the sand trap will be pumped to the desander cyclones for further separation. As desander cyclone is not a 100% separation device, the upper deck shale shaker is used after desander cyclone for further separation.

Centrifugal pumps are used as feeding pump for desander cyclones, and used as transfer pump.

After over 2-month hard working, last week, 1 package of solids and liquid separation equipment are ready for shipment. The separation equipment are designed together with an Canadian design company for a Municipal Engineering Project for the dredging slurry dewatering treatment.

Below are the major separation equipment included in the dredging slurry separation project:

1. There are 2 sets of double deck shale shaker equipped for the 1st stage separation. The shale shaker model is GNZS706. The upper deck of the shale shaker is equipped with bigger opening steel frame screens to remove the big materials in the waste water, such as plastic, rubbers, rocks, shoes, etc…The botton deck of the shale shaker use relative fine screens to remove smaller solids above a certain size.

2. After the 2 shale shakers, there is a desander mud cleaner, the model is GNZS703F-2S. There are 2 no. 10 inch desander cone above a linear motion shaler shaker GNZS703F. The shale shaker use fine screens. The desander mud cleaner with 10 inch desander cone can be used to remove the particles above 50 microns.

3. After desander, it is a desilter mud cleaner. The desilter model is GNZS703F-12N. There are 12 qty of desilter cone above a linear motion shale shaker GNZS703F. The screens used for desilter mud cleaner is finer than desander mud cleaner. The desilter mud cleaner with 4 inch desilter cone can remove particles above 27 microns.

4. The major precision separation equipment in the system is a 30 inch big bowl decanter centrifuge. The model is GNLW764A-VFD. It is the largest bowl decanter centrifuge made by GN Solids Control. The centrifuge bowl is up to 30 inch. And the bowl length is up to 3328mm. It is used to remove the ultra fine solids in the slurry and for dewatering treatment.

5. There are 3 qty liquid solids separation mud tank.

Screw conveyors and centrifugal pumps are used in the system for solids and liquid transfer.

GN Oil Sludge Treatment System is to use chemical to wash the oil sludge with heat to temperature of 60-70 C degree. After washing, the waste oil slurry is pumped to GN separation equipment to separate into oil, water and solids. The recycled water can be reused in the washing process, and the oil is clean enough to sell to the refinery company, the solids contain less than 2% oil which can be sent to biodegradation or thermal unit for final disposal if needed.

Below are some important points operators need to pay attention to while using GN oil sludge treatment system.

1. During shale shaker separation, clients should choose fine screens to remove particles up to 500 microns. It means all particles above 500 microns must be removed. It is to protection the centrifuges after shale shaker separation.

2. As disc centrifuge is easy to be blocked, the waste slurry enter into disc centrifuge must with solids less than 200 microns, and with less solids content. In this reason, 2-phase decanter centrifuge is used before disc centrifuge to further remove solids and reduce the solids content.

Why disc entrifuge is easy to be blocked, but clients still prefer to use it for water treatment and oil sludge treatment?

The reason is that, the clearance between the discs of the disc centrifuge is very small, which ensures that the separation is fine, and the solid particles can also be separated, so as to obtain a clearer liquid phase, which is the advantage of the disc centrifuge compared with other types of centrifuges, like decanter centrifuge.

However, the small disc gap requires more frequent manual cleaning and slag removal. If the manual cleaning and flushing of the flushing pump are not timely, the disc centrifuge is easy to be blocked during operation. This is the major disadvantages of the disc player. Operators can compare the advantages and disadvantages and make their decision to suit their job site situation.

3. The oil content in the solids which is discharged from decanter centrifuge is 1 ~ 3%.

4.15m3/h oil sludge treatment system adapts double deck shale shaker. The upper deck use steel frame screens with bigger opens. The bottom deck use fine API screen, API 40 is recommended for the bottom deck.

5. The oil content in the recovered water which is discharged from disc centrifuge is 1000 – 3000ppm. If clients want more clean water with less oil and soil, clients can add a water treatment unit after GN oil sludge separation system.

Centrifugal mud pump and decanter centrifuge is widely used at drilling rig job site. The centrifugal pump and oilfield centrifuge can be used in drilling mud solids control system and drilling waste management system.
Last week, GN Solids Control finished a batch of centrifugal pump pump and oil field centrifuge. The pumps and centrifuges will be shipped to an international drilling company.

There are 2 sets high speed decanter centrifuge included in the project. The centrifuge model is GNLW363CG. It is a 14 inch bowl size 2-phase separation decanter centrifuge. GNLW363CG decanter centrifuge is most popular used in oil and gas drilling mud systems. The 14 inch decanter centrifuge can adapt middle speed for barite recovery, or high speed for fine solids separation and dewatering treatment. Beside fixed speed decanter centrifuge, GN Solids Control can also offer VFD control decanter centrifuge and FHD centrifuge.

Screw conveyor is a transfer machinery which uses motor to drive screw rotation and push materials to achieve the purpose of conveying. Screw conveyor can be located at job site horizontally, inclined or vertically, it has the advantages of simple structure, small cross-sectional area, good sealing, convenient operation, easy maintenance, convenient closed transportation and so on.

Screw conveyor can be divided into two types: axial screw conveyor and shaftless screw conveyor. In appearance, it can be divided into U-shaped screw conveyor and tubular screw conveyor. Screw conveyor is widely used at drilling rig job site, especially the U-shaped screw conveyor is widely used to transfer drilling cuttings and other drilling waste materials.

Before the end of the last month 2021, GN Solids Control shipped a cuttings dryer package for an Africa client. The cuttings dryer package will be used to treat the drilling cuttings generated from drilling mud solids control system. Below are the major processing equipment included in the cuttings dryer package.

1) There is Qty 1 vertical cuttings dryer in the cutting drying package. Vertical cuttings dryer is used before decanter centrifuge. It is used to reduce the OOC in the OBM cuttings and to recover usable drilling fluids. Normally, GN Solids Control use 4kw screw pump as flush pump for vertical cuttings dryer. Sometimes, clients use 7.5kw screw pump as flush pump in order to interchangeable with centrifuge feeding pump. GN Solids Control can offer flush pump electrical control inside the vertical cuttings dryer control panel.

2) There are Qty 4 fixed speed decanter centrifuge with high speed and lower speed for drilling mud treatment. It is the most hot sale centrifuge model from GN Solids Control: GNLW363CG. 5.5kw and 7.5kw screw pump is recommended to feed for the centrifuge. The electrical control of the feeding pump is inside the centrifuge control panel. As there must be interlock system between centrifuge and feeding pump to protect the centrifuge from overload.

3) Screw conveyor is a popular transfer equipment used at oil and gas drilling job site. It is widely used to collect drilling cuttings from solids control shaler shaker and mud cleaner. And than feed to other cuttings drying equipment. GN Solids Control makes various size screw conveyor, the auger diameter is 10 inch, 12 inch, 14 inch, and 18 inch. GN Solids Control offers fixed speed screw conveyor and variable speed screw conveyor for optional.

Through some months tough manufacturing, GN Solids Control finished a 56,000 bbl liquid mud plant. It is the largest liquid mud plant designed and made by GN Solids Control. The 56,000 liquid mud plant will be shipped to an international drilling fluids service company.

The liquid mud plant includes mud treatment modular, mud mixing modular and mud storage modular. The 56,000 liquid mud plant includes below modular:

1. Drilling mud treatment modular with horizontal mud tank: it includes 1 qty of drilling mud shale shaker, the model is GNZS594F. It is a 4-panel linear motion shale shaker to treat the drilling mud. 1 qty of middle speed decanter centrifuge, the model is GNLW452D. The middle speed decanter centrifuge is used to recover batonite. Besides the middle speed centrifuge, there is a high speed centrifuge GNLW363C. The high speed decanter centrifuge is used to recover fine solids and reduce mud weight. Operators can choose to use neither one of the centrifuge, or use both centrifuge.

2.Mud mixing modular with horizontal mud tanks: mud mixing pump 4 ea, mud mixing hopper 4 ea. The mixing pump type used in the liquid mud plant is centrifugal pump with dual sealing system. Besides mud mixing, centrifugal pump can also be used for mud feeding, for mud pump supercharge, for mud transfer and etc…

3.Vertical tanks for mud mixing: There are qty 70 vertical mud tanks with volume 500bbls (80m³). It is a hugh work to build such big qty big tanks.

A set of Dewatering decanter Centrifuge, a Screw Press Dewatering Machine, and a Chemical Dosing Unit is designed and made for an environmental Company. The dewatering treatment will be used to treat waste slurry generated from industries.

The decanter centrifuge is a 2-phase centrifuge for liquid and solids separation. The chemical dosing system is a 3-compartment chemical dosing unit for automatic chemical mixing and dosing. There are agitators equipped on each tank compartment. It is mainly used for powder chemical mixing and dosing. Mostly, the powder chemical cannot be used immediately once it is mixed. As this reason, the 1st compartment is used to mixing chemicals. The 2nd compartment is waiting for use, normally, it takes around 20 ~ 30 minutes. After the chemical mixture is ready for use, it will flow to the 3rd compartment. There are chemical dosing pump equipped on the 3rd tank compartment. The ready chemical mixture will be feeding to decanter centrifuge.

The equipped used for this project is a 14 inch decanter centrifuge. Besides 14 inch decanter centrifuge, GN Solids Control can also make other big bowl size and small bowl size decanter centrifuge, like 9 inch, 18 inch, 22 inch and the big bowl up to 30 inch.

Besides the 3-compartment automatic chemical dosing unit, GN Solids Control also make various sizes of chemical dosing units for liquid chemical mixing and dosing.

There are normally 3 types of chemicals used for waste slurry treatment which is with oil. The operators choose the right types based on the sludge material situation.
1) Sludge separating agent or surfactant: It is mainly used for oil sludge separation. It can improve the separation performance of the oil sludge
2) Demulsifier: remove the oil and water in the emulsified oil-water mixture
3) Flocculant (PAM) or coagulant (PAC) : for ultra fine solids separation.It can be used for both oil sludge with oil and without oil. If the operators already dosed demulsifier, they should consider and calculate carefully to see if they need to add PAM / PAC or not. As demulsifier is to make oil, water and solids separated. But PAM / PAC is for flocculation. PAM / PAC will reduce the demuisifier performance and to make the oil, water and soil mixture again.

In some projects, acid or alkali will be dosed as the first step to balance the PH. If operators need to add acid or alkali, it is normally added before other chemical agents. The suitable PH can improve separation performance in some degree, but not much.

The Qty 4 shale shaker is a 4-panel linear motion single deck with composite frame pretension screens. The model of the shale shaker is GNZS594F. The mud cleaner in the shipment is GNZJ594F-3S16N for deep drilling. There are 4 nos of 10inch desander cone and 16 nos of 4 inch desilter cones included in the mud cleaner. Total handling capacity of the mud cleaner can be up to 1500GPM. It is a 3-in-1 combo type shale shaker C/W desander cleaner and desilter cleaner. The hydrocyclone unit is fixed to shale shaker deck by bolts and nuts. It is removable. In this condition, the combo type mud cleaner is capacity to be used as a normal type shale shaker.

Decanter centrifuge included in the shipment is GNLW454ET-VFD. It is a VFD centrifuge with high G force and big bowl for waste management to remove the fine solids. The decanter centrifuge is not the popular type for drilling mud treatment. GN Solids Control makes other decanter centrifuge models for drilling mud treatment.
