Traditional oil drilling will keep the drilling waste discharged from solids control system in a big pond/ pit near the rig. In some drilling sites, there are drilling waste management system to reduce the drilling waste and ship the dry waste by truck, and recycle the useful fluids to prepare for new drilling fluids. In some other sites, there are not drilling cuttings treatment system, they only remain them there, when it is full, they will use a waste truck to ship them to a facility for treating. During the transferring, the fluids waste will spray out and damage the earth nearby. The new trend is to reduce the pit or no pit at the drilling site. The idea is to improve the solids control system efficiency and connect it with drilling waste management system. The dry waste will be collected by screw conveyor continuously and finally transferred to cuttings box. When the cuttings box is full, it will be transferred by the truck as landfill or construction industry. There is no drilling waste hazardous leaved on the ground during the drilling process.

Recently, GN shipped several units of desander separation plant for construction machine. The desander machine can be used for bored pile foundation or TBM as well as the horizontal directional drilling projects.

 

Working principle of desander separation plant.

1) we match a same flow rate slurry pump. Transferring dirty mud from mud pit to separation plant down deck shaker screen.

2) Generally, we recommend 20mesh screen / 40mesh screen to separate the coarse solids from the dirty mud

3) The fluids will go down to the catch tank.  After that, we design centrifugal pump to transferring the mud to desander cones and separate the above 50microns solids particles.

1) Shale shaker, the first phase of mud recycling system, removes the particles above 100microns.

2) desander, the second phase of mud recycling system, remove the particles about 40-70microns.

4) vacuum degasser, remove the gas-cut drilling mud.

5) decanter centrifuge, the fourth phase of mud recycling system, remove the particles about 2-5 microns.

Drilling Cuttings Box For Oil Field Drilling Job Site

Drilling cuttings box is designed to transport drilling cuttings , solids out of desander , solids out of desilter and solids out of decanter centrifuge or pit cleaning waste during drilling operation . The drilling cuttings box transport by fork lift and set container loading point normally .The drilling cuttings box will be fully enclosed with a lifting frame and a large sealing door designed for filling and emptying , the cuttings box can be provided with certified lifting slings and discharge door has an internal seal for secure when transport .

A typical drilling cuttings box has an internal volume of 2.3 cubic meters and the size can be changeableinfact . The gross weight of 8000 KG is allowed the drilling cuttings box to be filled with an maximum of about 6600 KG of drilling cuttings or other drilling waste . There are fork lift working point for easy moving for fork lift .

The drilling cuttings from shale shaker will be depending on drilling conditions , normally the drilling size larger than 100 microns cause screen minimum normally 150 mesh size and drilling solids from desander will be larger than 50 microns , desilter solids will be larger than 20 microns . Different machine will produce different size drilling solids , decanter centrifuge will separate solids 2 to 7 microns , if client using middle speed centrifuge , solids above 7 microns but the solids will be finer if they use a high speed decanter centrifuge .

Drilling Waste Management System in Nigeria

Nigeria is a beautiful country, though for the first instance, some bad things come to us before thinking about the view, market or anything else. When my colleage is really doing business with Nigerian people, we found some nice person, and always good to cooperate with them, then my colleague said, Im now half Nigerian.

1. economic solution: desanding plants with a compact mud unit with 2 steps separating equipments, the shale shaker and the hydrocyclones, the desander cones or desilter cones. In order to get a compact design, GN designed the desanding unit as one equipment on one tank, it is a double shaker desander, like GNZJ-705E-D2S. The lower layer of shaker uses coarse screens, for the first step separation, the liquid falls into the tank and pumped to the upper located hydrocyclones for second step separation.

2. higher standard solution, also called self contained mud recycling system. They have 3 steps of separation, including shale shaker, desander cones with underflow drying shaker, and desilter cones with underflow drying shaker, besides the separation equipments, this kind of mud systems also have a mud mixing unit including mud mixing hopper and centrifugal pump for mixing.

For both above mentioned 2 kinds of desanding plants, or mud recycling unit, GN has 3 main optional capacities for clients to choose from. In fact, those 3 capacities are most popular ones among all the requests in this industry. There are 200GPM, 500GPM and 1000GPM mud systems.

GN Vertical Cutting Dryer and Drilling Waste Management System

To obey the strictenvironment rules, drilling waste in the gas and oil drilling isn’t permitted to release or landfill directly since it will serious pollute the land. Recently we have received one project from an offshore drilling service clients, they have over 20 years drilling experience in offshore drilling solids control service. Generally solids control equipment in size and weight will no problem for helicopter, but the mud tanks should be smaller in size and also in weight. 1) 2 sets helicopter shale shaker, GNZS594E-HB, GN Solids control shale shaker is with good performance and well support from us. This is 4 panel shale shaker with Composite material shaker screen.

2) 1 set helicopter mud cleaner GNZJ594E-2S12N, the treating capacity can reach to 1000gpm mud system. The mud cleaner with 2 pcs desander cones and 12pcs desilter cones, spare parts can also be replaced easily.

3) 2 sets helicopter decanter centrifuge. The centrifuges are also fixed speed centrifuge with smaller carbinet control panel. Variable speed centrifuge require a relatively large VFD control panel separated from centrifuge. However, the space in offshore is not allow. But one disadvantages for fixed speed control is that the speed change will be much harder, it may take about 3 hours to change the belt pulley to get different speed and it is not continuously change.

4) 8 sets helicopter mud tanks. The mud tanks is used vertically, not like conventional horizontally used mud tanks. All the helicopter equipment must be certified with third party certificate on lifting points and other related issues.

Solidification/stabilization (S/S) is a widely used treatment for the management/disposal of a broad range of contaminated materials and wastes; especially in those which is contaminated with substances classified as dangerous in the US.  The process treatment involves mixing a binding material into the contaminated material and/ or waste.  Such action objective of treatment is to protect men’s health and the living environment by immobilizing contaminated materials within the treated and controlled material.  Immobilization within the treated and controlled material which will prevent  migration of the contaminants to men as known, animals and plants.  This type of  treatment has been known to use treat radioactive wastes, since the 50s and hazardous waste since the 70’s. Fast forward to current time, the S/S continues as a cornerstone treatment technology for the management of radioactive waste, hazardous waste, and site preparation.

Government agency such as U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identify S/S as a technology of established waste treatment.  S/S is a main treatment technology for the waste management of industrial dangerous wastes. These wastes are regulated in the United States under the act of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). RCRA hazardous wastes are grouped into two classes: RCRA-listed and RCRA-characteristic. RCRA-listed hazardous wastes are wastes produced by industry that are generally known by the EPA to be hazardous. These wastes are “listed” in RCRA regulations and must be treated, stored, and disposed according to RCRA hazardous waste management regulations. RCRA-listed wastes destined for land disposal are required to be treated in order to reduce danger posed by the wastes after land disposal. RCRA-characteristic wastes are less routinely produced wastes that are found to be hazardous due to a characteristic of the waste. For RCRA-characteristic wastes, S/S can often be used to eliminate the danger characteristic. With the danger characteristic addressed the treated waste can be disposed at a lower cost or re-used.
